A Lace Dress for Amy's Wedding
Amy came to me a few months back with the dream of making her own wedding dress. She had some sewing experience but had never drafted her own pattern before or sewn with lace, so she wanted to learn some new skills along the way. We began by refining the design, creating a moodboard and ordering fabric swatches. We then drafted a pattern to her exact measuremnts and made a practice gown in cotton calico to check the fit and refine the construction methods. Once the lace had arrived (I cleaned every inch of the studio), we got cracking on the real thing - it only took Amy a couple of days to sew in the studio (she was fitting in the sewing on her days off between busy shifts as a Junior Doctor!). I was so proud of her for creating such a beautiful gown and I loved going on the process together.
Here’s some lovely words from Amy:
‘I had been making my own clothes for years and when I got engaged I was determined to make my own wedding dress. Although I had sewn a lot, I definitely needed another brain on this project! Lydia was very accommodating in setting up 1:1 sessions to help me learn pattern cutting from blocks, bodice fitting and construction techniques I would need for my design. I learned so much from the Made My Wardrobe team during this process and loved every second. I made every stitch of my dress in the studio and it turned out exactly how I imagined it. Lydia was so kind, knowledgable, patient and a fantastic teacher throughout this really special project. I cannot recommend the studio enough for a sewer of any experience level!’
