Introducing...Floating Stars

 

A few weeks ago I noticed I had three feelings going on at once.

  1. I missed my mum. Yes I’m a strong powerful woman but sometimes I miss my mum. My mum’s mum passed away last autumn and for various reasons (Covid) my mum and I had hardly seen each other since.

  2. I had a massive pile of scraps overflowing out of the scrap bin in my studio and it was bugging me that I had not done anything with them. I hate waste and I like to see every scrap of fabric used. Making clothes often leaves lots of odd-shaped scraps in the fabric bin and I wanted to find a use for them.

  3. My sister and I had been having conversations about wanting to run some sewing workshops for young people aged 8-14. We knew we wanted to have multiple scholarship places available for kids whose folks wouldn’t usually be able to send them on summer camps. I wasn’t sure how we would get funding for these scholarship places, so came to the conclusion we needed to find a way to fund them ourselves.

I tied all these loose ends together and came up with these patchworks! I call them Floating Stars.

My mum came to the studio for a few days and we spent the time patchworking scraps from the fabric bin together. I call her visits Mum-In-Residence. My sis and I would then sell the patchwork wall hangings to raise funds for the summer scholarships. So that’s where we are now!
